Easy Guide to Renew SIA Security Guard Licence

Somewhere in the UK right now, a security guard is standing at a Post Office counter with a folder of documents, hoping the photo they took that morning was a good one. Multiply that by the roughly 300,000 people who hold an SIA licence, and you get a sense of scale: this is a process almost every guard, supervisor and CCTV operator in the country has to go through, again and again, every three years.

And yet the SIA licence still catches people out. Not because the rules are complicated, but because they change quietly, and a licence you renewed without any fuss last time can suddenly demand a course you’ve never heard of.

That’s exactly what happened from April 2025, when the SIA made refresher training compulsory. Before you can renew SIA security guard licence a shift that has left more than a few experienced guards scrambling to book courses days before their card expired. This guide walks you through the process as it stands in 2026, step by step, so you’re not one of them.

You can apply to renew SIA security guard licence up to four months before it expires. The date is printed on your card and sits in your SIA online account, so there’s no guesswork involved.

Renewing early doesn’t cost you anything in lost time. The SIA simply carries over whatever time remains on your current licence and adds it to the new one, which starts the day after the old one lapses. What early renewal does buy you is breathing room and that matters, because your licence will not renew itself. Treat the expiry date as a deadline you’re working towards, not a formality that sorts itself out.

Here’s the part that trips people up most: you cannot book your security guard refresher course until you hold a valid Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) certificate, or an accepted equivalent, with at least twelve months left on it. Book the refresher first and discover your first aid has lapsed, and you’ll be starting the queue again.

If yours needs renewing, a FREC 3 (First Responder Emergency Care) qualification or a First Aid At Work Course (3 Days) both satisfy the requirement, and either gives you a longer-lasting, more thorough grounding than the bare minimum. If you already hold one that’s simply due for a top-up, look at FREC 3 Requalification rather than starting from scratch.

Once your first aid is in order, you can book the one-day Level 2 Award for Security Officers (Refresher). It covers counter-terrorism awareness, conducting searches properly, supporting vulnerable people, and conflict management skills that, frankly, sharpen with repetition rather than atrophy. Guidance from the SIA itself is clear that this applies regardless of how long you’ve held a licence or when you last trained.

Here’s the part worth saying plainly, because we got caught out by it too, in our own early advice to learners: this refresher requirement isn’t a formality bolted onto renewal. We initially treated it as a box-ticking add-on and told a few students to leave booking it until closer to their renewal date. Several found their preferred date fully booked. Think of the refresher slot like a seat on a train at peak time. Leave it too late and the fact that a seat exists somewhere doesn’t help you if it’s not on the train you needed.

You’ll need the same categories of proof as your first application: photo ID, two documents proving your address (nothing older than three months), and your training certificates. Log in to your SIA online account on GOV.UK, select renewal, check your details match your ID exactly, upload your certificates, and pay the fee.

From 1 April 2026, that fee is £204, following the end of a temporary £20 rebate that had brought it down to £184. It applies whether you’re renewing or applying fresh. And it’s payable whether or not your application succeeds. So it’s worth confirming your paperwork and eligibility before you submit, rather than after.

Before you pay, ask your employer. Many larger security firms will cover the fee for staff they want to keep, and some will submit the application on your behalf once you’ve linked your SIA account to theirs. It costs nothing to ask.

Most applicants get directed to a participating Post Office to have their documents checked and a new photo taken. Behind the scenes, the SIA runs identity, right-to-work and criminal record checks; the last of these happens for every renewal, not just new applications, so a clean record at your first licence doesn’t exempt you from a fresh check now.

Budget four to six weeks in total from booking your training to your new badge landing on your doormat, with SIA processing alone typically taking ten to twenty working days. If your renewal is still being processed when your old licence expires, you can usually keep working in the same role but only if you applied before the expiry date, not after.

Between the £204 SIA fee, refresher training (roughly £70–£180), and first aid if yours has lapsed (£60–£120 for EFAW, more for a fuller First Aid at Work Course), most guards should budget somewhere between £330 and £500 for a full renewal. If you’re adding a second sector licence, perhaps eyeing a Security Guarding Course alongside door supervision, a 50% discount applies, but only if both applications go in on the same day, on the same form.

Miss the window entirely and you can’t renew; you’ll need a fresh application instead. The reassuring part is that you won’t necessarily need to sit the full initial qualification again. Up to three years after expiry, completing the refresher and holding valid first aid is usually enough to get you back on the books.

Check your expiry date, sort your first aid, book your refresher early, gather your documents. Then apply through your SIA account well before the deadline. None of these steps is difficult on its own. What catches people out is sequencing: trying to book a refresher before first aid is sorted, or applying with three weeks left on the clock. Get the order right, and renewing your licence becomes a fairly unremarkable afternoon’s admin rather than a scramble.
